So you can quickly navigate to know about your breed.

So let’s get started.

Here is a quick answer.

Why do dogs drool? Dogs tend to drool due to several reasons. These reasons can be natural or abnormal. Outstanding reasons can be due to the scent of food, during playing, the sign of a good hunter, sick, nervous, stress, anxious, and many more. But the amount of drool varies by breed.

In most cases, this feature can be a bit annoying because many dogs tend to shake their head during slobber. So drools fly everywhere, sometimes even to your face.

Due to the above reason, most housewives do not allow dogs to enter the kitchen or close to the dining table.

But you must understand one thing. This behavior is a perfectly reasonable and necessary phenomenon for the excellent health of your dog.

Why do dogs drool? The normal circumstances

Why do dogs drool

There are many natural reasons for dogs slobbering. Here are the possible causes,

  • When dogs feel the scent of foods
  • When they are playing
  • During teething
  • Sign of a good hunter
  • When dogs feel a little bit nervous
  • When excited
  • Due to stress

When dogs feel the scent of foods

We discussed that people don’t like to keep dogs near the dining table because dogs tend to drool when they feel the scent of food.

In fact, their slobbering can be increased while you are making food for them. Because, they tend to think, “Why is this taking so long?”

When they are playing

Many dog breeds tend to drool extraordinarily when they are playing. In most cases, this can happen while they are running strongly with another dog.

Ironically, the dogs look a little too funny when they play because their nose is covered with sand.

Dogs love toys. Sometimes, you will see some sort of drooling as they are playing with their favorite toys.

Dogs tend to drool during the teething period.

Puppies love chewing toys during their teething period. So it’s a pretty normal thing having extremely drooling as they chew their toys.

Sign of a good hunter

We know every dog has bred for a specific purpose. Meanwhile, some dogs have bred for hunting.

So if dogs are drooling so much, that’s a genuine indication of the excellent hunting dogs. Therefore their salivating is not something to worry about.

Furthermore, dogs salivate to increase the sense of smell.

Many dogs have proven to be extremely salivating in the field. If you have a dog, bring him into an open space. You will see some sort of increasing their drooling.

Why do dogs drool

Also, occasionally foaming can happen. It increases when they explore something.

That is a fascinating relationship between some dogs’ drooling and their hunting performance.

Even in poor weather conditions, some hunting dogs are able to find a bird and point it out. Most vizslas after successful bird retrieval tend to stop their continuous salivating.

When dogs feel a little bit nervous

In most cases, you can see dogs tend to drool as they are afraid. For example, look at the following scenarios.

  • When they feel that you are going to cut their toenails.
  • You can see some sort of slobber from them while waiting in the examination room for the vet.

Dogs can drool as they get excited.

Dogs tend to drool as they feel a sexual desire. This mostly can happen for a male one as he feels the smell of a female dog.

When considering female dogs, they can slobber as they feel the smell of dogs. Also, it can happen when they are going to their first heat because they can get excited at the moment.

When they are stressed.

Many dogs have proven that their drooling can be increased as they are stressed. The typical examples are,

  • If you yell or blame at them
  • if you tie-up your dog.
  • In most aggressive situations, such as aggressive toward another dog or a stranger.

These are very reasonable reasons for dogs’ salivating. So you don’t need to bother too much about it in these cases.
