Dog Breeds List T-U: The World’s Breeds Starting With T-U

Here on this Dog Breeds List T-U are all the world’s dog breeds that begin with the letters T and U.   Please feel free to let me know if I’ve forgotten a breed or two.

This continues to be a work in progress because new breeds are being developed every day. If there is another dog breed that should be included on this Dog Breeds List T-U, please contact me. and I will add it promptly.

Breeders worldwide work hard to either preserve nearly extinct breeds or develop new ones with special abilities, looks or characteristics.

A well socialized and mentally healthy Tosa-Inu (“Inu” means “dog” in Japanese – see also “Akita-Inu“) should be good with children, gentle and loving with his family, reserved but readily accepting of strangers and should under no circumstances be allowed to believe that he is the Alpha Male or Pack Leader.

This is not a dog for first time owners or the elderly/infirm and not recommended for apartment dwellings or multiple dog households.

Due to his Japanese dog fighting history, the Japanese Tosa is banned in Australia, Cyprus, Denmark, Iceland, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Norway and Turkey.

The Toy Manchester Terrier (MT) was once an excellent ratter, ridding the Manchester part of England of all its vermin. Nowadays, this breed has all but retired from that role and now enjoys the life of a real canine companion.

He is alert and often wary of strangers — two traits that make them excellent watchdogs.

Being a terrier, these dogs are likely to be diggers, talkers, chasers and possessive of their belongings.  Most terrier breeds have these inborn characteristics –  “hunting tendencies” to one extent or another.

Tuareg Sloughi (Azawakh)

Grooming:  Minimal
Training:  Average
Recognition: FCI:  Group 10, AKC:  FSS, ANKC:  Hounds, KC:  Hounds, NZKC:  Hounds, UKC: Sighthounds. Pariahs

The Azawakh is sometimes mistaken for the Sloughi or even a Greyhound, but this is a separate breed from the Southern Sahara/West Africa region. They are rare outside of their home country, although they DO exist in many countries of the world.

They have a slim, rangy build, with clearly visible muscles and bones. Some owners have been accused of underfeeding their dogs!

Compared to its close relative the Sloughi, the Azawakh tends to be more of a pack animal. They prefer to be in a group or a family. They can be distrustful of strangers and people they do not know.

In the English speaking world, I could only find two breeds that began with the letter U

 Uruguayan Cimarron

Cimarrón Uruguayo (Uruguayan Cimarron)

Also Called Cimarrón Uruguayo

Origins:  Uruguay
Size: Large to Giant
Grooming:  Easy
Training: Time Consuming

Utonagan

The Utonagan is a hybrid dog breed, developed with the specific intention to look like a wolf. The breeder responsible was Edwina Harrison in the United Kingdom, and this all happened in the 1980s. It is a blend of 3 breeds – Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, and Alaskan Malamute.

These dogs are not aggressive, but need a firm hand and strong leadership. They need quite a bit of exercise, and are not best suited to apartment living. If they have been well socialized, they make great family pets, and get on well with children.

Utonagans are not recognized by any breed clubs yet, such as the AKC, the UKC nor the British Kennel Club.

Did I Miss a Breed?

With so many dog breeds in this world, there is a good chance I may have omitted one. First of all, I will apologize for that omission, especially if your dog was the one I forgot. Secondly, won’t you take the time to send me a quick note, letting me know what dog breed should be on this page?

I sincerely appreciate your time and will get the breed information up as quickly as possible. Use the Contact Me link to tell me about a breed that should be listed on this dog breeds list t-v.  And, as always, I thank you.
