Grooming: Easy

This is a very ancient breed, over 3,000 years old, and was worshipped by the Aztecs. The Mexican name ‘Xoloitzcuintli’ is pronounced ‘show-low-eats-queen-tlee’, often shortened simply to ‘Xolo’ (pronounced ‘show-low’). Confusingly, there are 3 sizes – Toy, Miniature and Standard,  AND they can be hairless OR with hair. This page is about the hairless breed.

This is an intelligent and sensitive breed, and needs company and mental stimulation. They do best when they can play with another dog or 2, are included in the family group, and are allowed to spend time and sleep indoors.

Yorkipoo hybrid dog

A small Yorkipoo dog sitting on a dark brown armchair

Origins: USA
Size: Small
Grooming: Easy to Average
Training: Easy to Average
Recognition:  None – hybrid dog

A Yorkipoo is a ‘designer’ dog resulting from crossing a pure-bred Yorkshire Terrier with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. They are very affectionate, and suitable for apartment dwellers as long as they are socialized enough to minimize their barking. They are best suited to owners who work from home or are retired, so that the dog is not left on its own for long.

This dog is bright, confident and bursting with energy. They are very affectionate, and love being with their ‘family’. The terrier genes give the confidence, but the Poodle genes make the Yorkipoo more mellow than many small dogs.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terrier

Origins: England
Size: Small
Grooming: Average to Time Consuming
Training: Average
Recognition:  FCI:Group 3 Terrier,  AKC: Toys,  ANKC: Toys,  CKC: Toys,  KC: Toys,  NZKC: Toys,  UKC: Companion

Bold, affectionate, bright and fearless are words often used to describe the Yorkie’s personality. They enjoy adventures as well as snuggles, but they still maintain the terrier part of their temperament, which means they can be feisty and vocal. Possessing a very dominant character, they will not hesitate to stand up for their rights, even if it means attacking a dog twice their size.

Some Yorkies are great off leash, but since they are terriers and have that terrier mentality, they shouldn’t be left off leash until they have a firm recall.  They are small and fast and if something catches their eye, you can lose your little guy in an instant.
